Sufri not Sunni

middle-age American living in New Jersey near the Lincoln Tunnel «« In the recent hour I was motivated to blog about a light story when Hana discovered my bicycle was stolen, and then headlines reminded me: “300” dead. Reports are calling the victim’s fellow Muslims of the gunmen, but more reading reveals Sufri not Sunni. ¿Que pasa? Though I don’t know the difference I can be sure both groups say, “as salam alaikum” yet the gunmen planned and execute a dozens-of-gunman mass murder. In business I am partnered with a Muslim man of Chennai, and I sort of think he’s Sunni, but I’m not sure. I think about Muslim prayer as it relates to our business relationship. His methodology about business follows what I see in Muslim prayer . . . dedication . . . unity . . . peace . . . disciplin. Yet dozens of gunmen plan and execute an attack in the name of Islam claiming the Sufri are not Muslim. The Sufri were in their Mosque praying, which for someone wanting to mass kill it’s the perfect time. People gather at a predictable time and take a physical posture of humility before Allah. The Sufri’s mass prayer makes them vulnerable to mass murder. The gunmen are likely to claim they are authentic Muslims and they may also celebrate how the imposters died at their hands.
