¿Genius? Chuck Berry

middle-age American living in New Jersey near the Lincoln Tunnel «« Chuck Berry is being called a genius by some, which on the occasion of his death is sensible even though it was probably not literally true. The genius of Berry is in how he expressed himself so precisely. Chuck targeted his message to his fans, and he reached teenagers while being almost two decades their senior. He reached Rafael as a teenager in the Bronx and Harlem. Rafael now lives in my barrio and we talked about Berry at La Gran Via this morning. Berry also reached Alejandro in Peru who lives with Hana and me and shares common space. Alejandro’s teenage years were in the mountains of Peru, and Berry reached across languages, continents, and terrain to my Peruano amigo. The smiles from Alejandro and Rafael in my recent conversations speak to Berry’s greatness. A more intellectual analysis came from media dissecting his lyrics. He created words to be clever and fit the music like Dr. Seuss used chimbley Berry used coolerator. Both men demonstrated a similar ability to creatively twist the English language to serve their purpose. Seuss spoke to kids learning to read, and Berry spoke to teenagers wanting to have fun in ways their parents didn’t. It’s as if Berry wrote the script for his teenage fans to say to their parents: “Mom Dad no more Beethoven . . . . please . . . . Roll Over Beethoven” »» about me 302-990-2346 nearlincoln@hotmail.com contact us
