My professional accomplishments as a corporate climber are directly connected to my intensity as are my failed relationships. Overtime I’ve seen the pattern as I sort the pieces, and get rewarded for my success, but for the first time I can see the effect of my intensity in real time. As a pedicabber I get the opportunity to see this take effect solicitation by solicitation, ride by ride, and this allows me to see the effect of my intensity in fresh interaction many times each NYC rush hour. “Obnoxious” was the word choice over two consecutive days ending (I hope) yesterday, and at the same moment my solicitation proved to be successful, and my next ride delivered something great to my passengers. It represents a thousand marketing campaigns we can do together. I am writing this to keep my focus, which is at risk of having ADD divert me elsewhere: My first priority is the first, “a law firm, a pedicabber, and an Indian call center” campaign. Once this campaign is running, then it can move to the background while we set a new target. The paper phone book does things the internet can’t do. The first of many examples is the magnets attached to the cover. These are designed to be removed and attached to someone’s refrigerator, and it’s an expensive promotion. The advertiser can’t possibly give proper attention to all the people responding, so it represents an opportunity to you and me. Once again, I am getting ahead of myself. middle-age American living in New Jersey near the Lincoln Tunnel <<< Yesterday I was insulted by a man in the cab line on Eight Avenue. He said I was obnoxious, and I can tell I’m not over it. I was inside the boundaries of the law and my sense of manners, so why I am bother by this. I was at least ten feet away when he insulted me, and I was not soliciting him directly, but rather several cab hunters together. I approached him, and said, “Why the editorial?”, “I didn’t ask for your evaluation”, and “Do you want to hear my opinion of you?” This silenced him, and I was able to get a passenger from the end of the quickly growing line. When I was a novice pedicabber I would have had this conflict with more visible and audible signs that I was in conflict, but now I am careful of my arms, posture, expression, and volume, so to hide the conflict. Yes, it was effective since I did not leave empty. I would be pleased to see this guy again. He also said something about New York as if he were softening his insult by that fact that it was typical of New York. No, his insult stands, and he probably would find me obnoxious as a pedicabber in Boston, Chicago, or Chennai, India. I used my new Vegas promise in my solicitation with success tonight. A man and a woman separated in the cab line by a woman going to Brooklyn declined to tell me their destinations, and I said, “I’ll give you my Vegas promise, what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, and the same is true for me, fugitives, spies and many others have reason to keep their destination secret, so you have my promise, if you tell me your destination, then I will only use it to present my services, and I will take it to my grave. What happens in Vegas says in Vegas.” The woman going to Brooklyn laughed, and the line grew by one, and that man became my next passenger. I told my mom today during our first conversation since her brother died that I know if I had a traumatic event and then became unreachable, I would expect to be scolded for causing my mother worry, but I am not her mother, she is mine, so there would be no scolding, but I wanted her to know I was worried. Nice start to a nice conversation. I read my ciao Joe Rachor post to her, and mailed it to her in Wisconsin. I told her about Marty’s message to me to assure me that my teenage son and daughter knew of Uncle Joe’s death, and it felt good. I often worry about them being left out, and, “that doesn’t happen” in a tone that was reassuring in a way only a mother could do. All I had to do is relocate and rely on other family members, and my kid’s family stayed united. I am pleased. My mom told me she mentioned to a funeral home employee that her brother was in the army, and there they were at the cemetery with the flag folding ceremony, por supuesto presented to my mother, the only survivor from Joe’s generation. Then a soldier played Taps. Beautiful, just hearing her account unlocked the whole American experience, and it was emotional. Members of our military do this ceremony with such impressive precision. It seems any two members of our armed forces could fold the flag with any other member of the armed forces without additional practice, and it would be perfect. Look no further for evidence that the US armed forces are high functioning. My Uncle was part of the Break Out following the Normandy Invasion, and 67 years and eight months later his contribution was honored. Adding my father and his siblings and siblings in law and my mother’s siblings and siblings in law totals thirteen, and my Uncle Joe and my mother were the two survivors, and it’s ironic that Joe was the first born of the thirteen and my mother was the youngest. I am not able to put money into the Chennai credit card account. Please understand, I know you want to start calling on this campaign, and you’ve assured me the payment is secondary, but to me it’s primary. Since the payment I am trying to make to you is not for calls made on this campaign, then it leaves me feeling less anxious about the barrier I just discovered with SBI. Finding you is the result of a long and methodical search, and if I owed you money for work completed, but I had international banking problems, then I would have the sense I could negate my search just by a delay. Again, I trust your assurances of the opposite are sincere, but from my standpoint I need to know banking will not be a problem before you make calls on this campaign. I hope you can understand.
